Re: “Off the Boulevard

and I meant to put south *along* Hull Street, not south *of* Hull Street. Particularly the Bells Road sort of area.

Re: “Off the Boulevard

"Better suited for the suburbs," as opposed to Shockoe, and ripping up historic skyline, sure. Suburbs, meaning rip up some farm or forest in Powhatan? No thanks. Remember, people keep redefining "suburbs" to mean "any piece of land they want". How long until they rip up the Appalachian Trail for a shopping mall?

Meanwhile, we've got some urban blight that could use some repurposing. What do you think of this:

What they *could* do is make a new stadium totally green, run on renewable energy like many stadiums elsewhere. You can build stadiums and complexes these days that not only supply all of their own energy, but also harness additional energy to the grid. This is vital for a location which would otherwise sit empty most days. Plow down some of the vacant scariness south of Hull Street in the city, and revitalize the neighborhood, coupling it with some solid anchor like a new community college campus (with a focus on multiple levels of jobs needed in renewable energy), maybe attract some renewable energy companies, maybe even theme the local AA or AAA team to name themselves something terribly environmentally friendly. That can help provide a good anchor to help attract commercial/ retail ventures, and then hopefully better housing -- for ALL income levels, including the ones often displaced.

Of course, being Richmond, what they will likely do is rip up a farm or something. But with enough people pushing smarter ideas, one can hope. I don't like suburbs either, but endlessly plowing down farmland and trees is a rotten idea. Better to improve the unfortunate concrete jungle off of Jeff Davis Highway. I can't think of a better place to rip down and feel good about it.

(One of many pieces on stadiums harnessing energy from resources like solar power: http://cleantechnica.com/2012/04/06/brazil… )

Re: “Form and Function

In fairness, I'm pretty sure he's beating the children with a book.
