Re: “First Mayoral Candidate Says Tourism Is the Answer”
Excerpt: "Tatnall’s main concern, he says, is that 'the city’s not being run like a business.' He proposes a simple way to increase revenue without raising taxes: tourism. "
Why should management of a city be focused on profit-maximization? The well-being of the public shouldn't be at the mercy of the market; the security of the citizenry is far more important than the expectations of shareholders or executives seeking bonuses or short-term gain.
In a 1996 article titled, "A Country Is Not A Company," in Harvard Business Review, the Economics Nobel Laureate Paul Krugman wrote, "What people learn from running a business won't help them formulate [sound] economic policy."
