Re: “2011 Richmonder of the Year: Shaka Smart”
While VCU (and UR, who also had a great run) did ignite a city, the lasting effects will keep that momentum going. This year, VCU was expected to struggle, but is 11-3, and knocked off some pretty good teams. The Siegel Center is sold out and a VCU ticket is hard to get. Sell out crowds, out of town alumni who can not wait to get to a game, and winning seasons rather than rebuild years will not just bring loud crowds to the home of the Broad Street Bullies. Those same crowds bring cash, tax revenue, fill hotel rooms and create jobs. TV exposure and active out of town alumni bring renewed interest to a city that almost seemed forgotten. It's just a game, but one that can be so much more... and this is just the beginning. Great story.
