Re: “Firetruck Monitors Unnerve Firefighters

When I worked at Richmond Ambulance Authority I dreaded the black box. You were only allowed a certain number of infarctions per miles driven and so you started to drive in the way the box deemed safe, and not in an intelligentr, defensive, manner. The box gives you points for a short stop, which as anyone who's driven a large vehicle can attest, happens all too frequently from circumstances beyond the driver's control (eg short yellow lights and nattentive other motorists).

I know the box didnt make me into a safer driver, it made me into a timid ambulance operator who ended up getting into a major accidwnt despite that.

The RFD would've been better off spending the money on driver education classes and paying their employees overtime.

Re: “Regulated to Death

Personally, I could care less who Mo Karn is and would rather focus on what she says in this article. The article is made up of valid points which are clearly stated and that is why I will read and think about it.

Read the message and stop focusing on the messenger.

I used to be an avid First Friday Goer until they changed the hours and the police presence became intrusive. I also used to not fear for my safety when I went down to the bottom. If anything the situation in the bottom is getting worse and the police aren't helping. Since when does closing off streets, thus cutting business's foot traffic help? Also, by funneling everyone onto streets which aren't patrolled the cops are essentially giving a whole mess of people road rage and funneling them onto streets which aren't patrolled. In what world does that help contain crowds and increase safety? All it means is that people are already annoyed if and when they get to the clubs, thus furthering the problem.
