Re: “Beyond Terror

I'm not commenting on the content of your piece, per se (that would take way too long), just your facts. I checked the Henrico County Board of Supervisors website (http://www.co.henrico.va.us/supervisors/), and there is no Sam Ward on that board. I believe Mr. Ward spoke in favor of approving the permit. As an aspiring journalist, you need to be careful with your facts.

Re: “High On Tide

anonymous, I'd agree with you that electric cars are economically questionable - the payoff for the extra cost gained through savings on gas is way beyond the useful life of the vehicle.

I'm puzzled, though, by your "affordable, energy efficient, historically doable" comment about rail. No light rail system in this country pays for its operations through ticket sales, and none exists without substantial subsidy from the taxpayers. Nationwide, non-users of light rail pay for 92% of its costs (http://www.coyoteblog.com/coyote_blog/2011…). I expect the economics are similar in Norfolk, and would be in Richmond as well. Light rail projects are a continual drain on the public purse for the benefit of a tiny segment of the population. They also have a tendency to take public funds from bus transportation systems, which offer service to a much higher percentage of the population, and a wider geographical area. Light rail is only "affordable" in the sense that someone else is paying most of the fare.

As for energy efficiency, there's not much evidence that light rail saves any energy at all over each of those riders driving a car (http://www.cato.org/pub_display.php?pub_id…)
