Second Place: First Fridays Art Walk
Third Place: RVA Street Art Festival
Three of the leading reasons people live in Richmond are its history, the outdoors and the city's arts scene. All three intersect at the annual Arts in the Park, held the first weekend in May. The gathering is as much an excuse to promenade as to buy a painting or vase from one of the 450 vendors. There's a reason this event is 43 years old and going strong: Even with no pets allowed, locals and visitors would apparently rather stroll Byrd Park to look at art than do so inside a building. Need further proof we like our art al fresco? Both runners-up are also outdoor events, one a longstanding institution and the other a relative newcomer. Give us some art in the sunshine and we're happy as pigs in slop.
