Ed Harrington's weekly cartoon, "The HR Department," debuted in Style Weekly Feb. 25, 2004. Readers have come to relish his sardonic, often jolting take on the modern workplace, where many of us spend the majority of our waking hours.
Harrington, our deputy managing editor for presentation, is a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University. He and his dry sense of humor have been with Style since 2002. He previously served as art director for our now-defunct sister publication, Inside Business Richmond, where his cartoon launched.
There's no edge-of-the-seat creation story here, though. The weekly business journal "just needed a cartoon," he says. "I wanted to just do something work-related. More mundane. It was filling a need."
The cartoon seemed to resonate with readers. And it soon earned honors at the Virginia Press Association's annual statewide competition.
Last year, Harrington earned national attention when he bested a contributing cartoonist to The New Yorker at the AltWeekly Awards, an annual competition honoring the best of journalism at alternative newsweeklies across the country. He took first place among cartoons running in three or fewer newspapers in the contest, sponsored by the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies, and his winning entries are published in the book "Best AltWeekly Writing and Design 2006."Back to the Cover Story
