30. Umesh Dalal

Richmond City Auditor

If there’s any question that City Auditor Umesh Dalal is a force to be reckoned with, consider a recent council workshop concerning the new jail contract. His mere presence in the room created palpable tension and sparked an argument between President Kathy Graziano (No. 48) and Councilman Marty Jewell, who requested Dalal’s assistance. His report, expected July 18, has all of City Hall a little nervous. It should. The auditor’s unsparing investigations continue to make waves — waste at city schools, fraud, you name it — even if his recommendations aren’t always implemented.
