22. The Gottwald Family

Richmond Philanthropy

In a year lacking in high-profile gifts, the Gottwalds’ philanthropy still provides a stable base for Richmond’s nonprofit community. The family owns substantial stock in three publicly traded companies that are either based in the area (Tredegar Corp. and NewMarket Corp.) or have local ties (Albemarle Corp.). NewMarket reported a $177 million profit in 2010, up 9 percent from the year before. The family is active in politics too. In the 2010 cycle alone, the Gottwalds gave $242,800 to Republican candidates and political action committees, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.
