PBS is Worth Support

I wanted to take this opportunity to express my regret in your decision to publish the article regarding PBS fund-raising (Back Page, "Money Talks," Nov. 13).

PBS is struggling, as many of us are in these economic times. Layoffs, cutbacks and new proposed budget changes to public radio loom heavily over the heads of the local and national stations.

It is, after all, Public Broadcasting System, which survives on the support of its listeners and viewers. The fund-raising tactics they use are what works for them. I do not always concur with their methods, however, I understand that they are trying to emphasize the importance of the support from their community.

Regardless of Lisa Singh's opinions on the quality of programming provided by PBS radio, she has overlooked her role in the situation. Instead of determining the worth of public radio to herself, she has now set forth an article to determine the value of public radio to the community.

Its the matter of choice. Listen or do not listen. Watch or do not watch. Support or do not support.

Should Style Weekly continue to publish articles of this nature, I will begin to exercise my options of choice. To read or not read.

Correction

Because of an editing error, Style incorrectly reported that former Richmond Ballet principal dancer Maria Gisladottir was going to perform in "The Nutcracker" (Street Talk, Nov. 27). Rather, on opening weekend, returning Ballet stars Igor Antonov and Marina Antonova, members of the company from 1990 to 1995, will play the roles of the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Cavalier on opening weekend, Dec. 13-15. Style regrets the errors.
