Peter Bernard, chief executive of the nonprofit BonSecours Virginia, which operates the St. Mary's, St. Francis, Richmond Community and Memorial Regional hospitals, is extending plans for new urbanist hospital developments from Midlothian to the West End. Bernard has become a key player in local power circles, and has forged a close partnership with the mayor's office and the housing authority to improve health care in the inner city, recently holding public meetings to gather input for a revitalization of Richmond Community in the East End.
