11. Peter J. Bernard

Bon Secours Virginia Health System CEO

By some accounts, Bon Secours Virginia Health System’s bottom line might have been better off if the company had closed the East End’s Richmond Community Hospital years ago. Instead, its chief executive has led the way in pushing to revitalize the 25th Street and the Nine Mile Road corridor. Bernard isn’t your ordinary suburban hospital chief: While managing three other area hospitals (St. Mary’s in Richmond, Memorial Regional in Mechanicsville and St. Francis in Midlothian), he’s working to bring much-needed health care to city’s poorest neighborhoods. He’s also loaned his support for a free-standing, full-service children’s hospital.
