The Score

A weekly rating of the city zeitgeist.

Posted on Tue, Feb 23, 2010 at 4:00 AM

+8 There is no snow. Do not be alarmed.

+4 With the final word, “eulogy,” eighth-grader Ben Youngstone of Binford Middle becomes champ of the city schools' spelling bee. He'll now help the school system's budget writers, who just can't bring themselves to spell “charter school.”

+9 Nearly a week of events, including a performance by John Legend, kick off to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 34 Virginia Union University students arrested for demanding service at a segregated Thalhimers lunch counter. The week starts off rocky, though, after the Legend concert triggers “mass swooning.”

-5 The football coach who had sex with two students, ages 15 and 17, is off to prison, sentenced to 21 months. He wanted a couple of field goals; he gets a good ball-kicking.

0 The T-D reports that Gov. Bob McDonnell will campaign for House candidate Kerry Bolognese. We hope this involves wearing a Bolognese sandwich board.
