Mudd Helmüt at Playing Field

Saturday, July 31
by Brent Baldwin

Every scene needs a godmother, and for certain Richmond rock deviants that presence for more than 20 years has been Stacy Prescott. Today she battles brain cancer without health insurance (she recently had a tumor removed), and like any community worth its salt, her old musical friends are pulling together to help a sister out. The big-font news is the reunion of ’80s drunk-rock outfit Mudd Helmüt featuring twangbilly cult figure Wes Freed (artist for Drive By Truckers and NASCAR) on vocals, Dan-O Deckelman on guitar, bassist Ben Lawes (Dickie Disgusting and the Blindboys) and Scott Schuppert on drums, plus an unholy slew of other local punk-rock luminaries. Once known for loud shows with female audiences clad only in underwear, Mudd Helmüt makes perfect sense during this sweltering Richmond summer, performing at the Playing Field on Saturday, July 31, at 4 p.m. $10. 755-7700.
