Under the Influence

The Belvidere at Broad is a companionable choice.
by Joseph W. Cates
Serving clean, fresh and attentively prepared American cuisine, the Belvidere at Broad also boasts a friendly vibe and exceptional service.  Bring a friend.

Whom you’re with can make all the difference.

When it comes to sharing a meal, as much as the ambience, the service and even the food, your dining partners can influence how you observe and remember a dining experience. I was jolted into realizing this by my recent visits to the Belvidere at Broad. Both were positive. The restaurant’s renditions of new American cuisine are clean, fresh and attentively prepared. The servers are that exceptional blend of friendly and invisible. And the place already has a sense of history and the vibe of revitalization creeping west along Broad.

The girls and me, Tuesday at 5: Early enough for ya? Yep, we’re here at 5:30 p.m. and we’re hungry and we want one of everything five minutes ago, and our 4-year-old won’t break your glassware, trust us. We expect you to be on point already, even though you’ve scarcely exhaled that last puff before the doors open.

Our server is the kind who makes you consider becoming a regular. She engages my daughter with good humor while keeping pace with what her exhausted parents are trying to communicate. When the appetizers — bruschetta, house-smoked salmon and crab cakes — arrive, we are impressed. It takes a bit longer than some of us are used to waiting, but it is, as the menu explains, well worth the extra time that attention to detail takes.

The entrees follow at pace and the filet of beef with ruby port demiglace is exactly what I’m looking for in a $28 steak: quick-seared and evenly medium rare, the presiding flavor of the demiglace still beef, but underscored by the sweetness of reduced port. The veggie lasagna is beautifully flavored but the pasta suffers from the refiring. The herbed brown rice and string beans are steaming hot and freshly prepared. Considering how often sides are overlooked, it’s noteworthy when someone gets it right. And our 4-year-old isn’t the only one who appreciates perfect rice.

A couple of old hacks camping at table 1: It’s a Saturday night. The place is packed. Luckily we manage to sneak from the bar to the booth farthest back, godfather rule. It’s difficult to describe my companion’s glee at being on the other side of the line for a change, and on somebody else’s dime to boot. That’s definitely for the best; beyond embodying the older-school philosophy of Bourdain’s kitchen crew, my friend is also a bona fide sailor and Irish. Try as I might I can’t get him to disengage from analyzing everything and just eat. But that’s like asking a drummer not to tap along with the rhythm he hears in his head.

I mean, there are some other words in there, but mostly it’s just cursing. Here’s an abridged version:

The efficiency of the menu equals ability to focus plate by plate: Henry Ford, son. Zen and the pivot foot of the two-station dance. The small menu works because crossovers from app to entrée, from entrée to salad to sandwich, make sense for a place with 36 seats. Bar and grill meets bistro Asian-American Southern eclecticism seems pretty familiar these days, but narrow focus allows for real attention to detail and consistency. The design allows for streamlined stocking of staples complemented by local produce. One of each typical protein: filet of beef, tuna steak, salmon, chicken and shrimp. You could visualize how smoothly and efficiently this joint could run. How little waste. You could really nail your food costs down. Quite practically run a two-cook line. You could have a good time doing it.

Everything is better than we expect. The fillet of beef on baguette is worth returning for.  The hummus platter is better than average and big enough to share with drinks after work. The soy and ginger marinated ahi tuna and the stir-fry trio of asparagus, mushrooms and red peppers again shows attention to detail worth paying and waiting for. And maybe that’s it: This is the kind of place I could see having a conversation in, where the servers know when and how to hang back, and good food is a given. And you aren’t in a rush. A place to spend a few hours and listen to the music and the other patrons at a distance, and someone you haven’t seen in a while. I just wish it were open for lunch.

Went there once with my wife. The crab cakes were some of the meatiest and "crabbiest" examples I've ever had I don't think a single breadcrumb was used. My burger was one of the best I've had in Richmond having gruyere as a choice for cheese was nice, and the sweet potato fries were perfect. Service was great and, as noted by Cates, unobtrusive. We are looking forward to returning...

NO WAY, you need to STFU and stay out of downtown Richmond. The only thing restaurants hate more than an a**hole is an a**hole in a party of seven.

No Way I tend to think your acerbic personality might be the cause of the treatment you recieved. Though we live in a society where the customer is always right you prove to be an exception to the rule. Your post sounds petty childish complaining over any constructive contribution. Even if she was as bad as you posted you paint her you look even worse.

I don't know what's wrong with NO WAY, but I have to respectfully disagree. This is a FABULOUS restaurant and a great addition to downtown! The food was one of THE best meals I have ever eaten, from app to entree to dessert. I have the great pictures to prove it!

The service was also great, fast and friendly. I love it so much I got my friends a gift certificate and I will continue to recommend it to everyone I know.

No Way, uh, The Belividere doesn't accept reservations. Period. They never have. Also, if you want to eat in a timely manner it might help if every member of your party shows up at the same time, don't you think? Were all the members of your party there at 6:30? Were they, honestly? Did you order appetizers? You did? Because typically a restaurant of The Belvidere's caliber will wait for you to finish them before firing your food. They aren't Applebees, which appears to be what you are more accustomed to. Were you looking for something free? I've never heard someone whine so much about not getting something for free. It's practically the basis of your complaint. You didn't get 7 free desserts. You wanted a free dessert for every member of your party? That's ludicrous and trashy. You might get away with that at your local TGI Fridays, but I doubt even they would put up with your obvious attempt at what is practically theft. Did you loudly refuse to pay the bill, causing a minor "scene"? Lets recap:
You have lied about having reservations, because the restaurant doesn't take them.
Your party didn't show up at the same time, which you have conveniently forgotten to mention, which added to how long you were there.
You ordered appetizers and for some reason wanted your food out immediatly following them being put on your table.
You pull a temper tantrum because the restaurant won't give every single member of your party a free dessert, despite the fact that there really isn't ANY restaurant that would do that.
You cause a scene by refusing to pay your bill, drawing attention from people (my girlfriend and I who were at the bar just out of camera shot) who were trying to enjoy their meals.
You're pathetic. I'm glad your picture was taken in this article, because in this way other restauranteurs can see you coming from a mile away and know that all you're interested in is getting as much free stuff as possible.
Leave The Belvidere to the real dining public, and stay true to what you are: someone who belongs at Olive Garden or Red Lobster.

Great restaurant. Owner was very gracious and attentive. Food and service excellent. Will return

Wow, we ate here recently. The food and service were absolutely wonderful. I have no idea where"NoWay" is coming from. I have a few other friends who went on our suggestion and they loved it.

Well I've been twice and have had good experiences both times. The one "bad" exception was a mixup with splitting tabs. The bartender ended up having to write out our tabs twice which wasn't our intention in the least but he wasn't nasty about it. That's more a statement about their check out system than anything else. The food and the beer have always been good and the people running the place have always been friendly, even when I showed up a half hour before opening. My friend actually chatted with the owner the first time we were there and he seemed like a friendly guy. I seriously doubt NO WAY's experience was as one-sided as they make it out to be.

Well, no need for "personal attacks" but calling the owner 'NASTY and spiteful' makes it a bit personal, doesn't it? Too bad for your friends, who might have given the restaurant another try at a different time, with a smaller party, but who may now never want to show their face in there again.

One more thing...I am NOT ashamed to point out that I am in the picture. I am not afraid to share my opinion. I think everyone derserves one. Like I said, the food was OK. I would go back and support a local business owners but due to the rash and irrational owner, I will not be giving this place another chance. It doesn't deserve one from me. It was the horrible owner that left a very bad taste in my mouth. I have every right to make a comment about that. And if some one feels that they need to come at me on a personal and immature nature and debate my OWN comment has a real problem. I am allowed to share my experience I had at this place. I certainly would never expect everyone to have the same opinion, nor would I force them to. But I would expect some amount of respect for my opinion as I respect others. I am not the type to think that this happens all the time either! Just be warned...don't go in a party larger than 4....you just might get screwed... thats all. No need for personal attacks hillsman. I would hope you are more mature than that...

I love reading the food reviews and live in the area. My experiences have also been great and the tenderloin and mashed potatoes are incredible. This place is nearby and gets my vote.

WOW...sounds like you might be the NASTY owner that likes to take away comps from customers!!! Whats wrong? You can't blame this one on your "small kitchen"??? This is your problem. And my wrting skills FAR surpass yours and your customer service. And if you aren't the NASTY owner, and are a customerand have had a great time there, you must have had a small party so the kitchen could handle your order.

WOW, I've been there a dozen times and always had a great experience. Your writing style makes it sound like maybe you are horrible street bums. I'd be ashamed to point myself out in the photo.

I DO NOT agree with this review. I was there the night this picture was taken. We are the table on the left, party of 7. We arrived at 6:30 WITH reservations and did not get served our dinner (6 sandwiches and a plate of pasta) untill almost 8:30!!! We were told by our server we would be comped a round of drinks and dessert. But the owner of this place decided that her kitchen couldn't handle 9 desserts, the kitchen was too backed up (we only ordered 7 desserts...COUNT MUCH???!!!) and ultimately took away ALL of our comps for some reason. She was a NASTY woman. RUDE and NASTY. She also proceeded to talk smack about our table to all of the people at the bar!!! Its a small place, we could hear her!!!! This woman should NOT be dealing with customers. The food was OK for sandwiches. Nothing to write home about thats for sure, but the owner is definately something to write about!! It is unheard of to give comps only to take them away out of spite!! We had every reason to be upset about NOT eating for 2 hours!!! No one came to check on us during our wait. Nothing was offered to help the time pass....NOTHING! And when an attempt was made to make it right, the NASTY owner of the place decided to take the little we did get comped, away!!! TERRIBLE. Just Terrible. I guess if you dine there with less than 4 people, this will not happen, but I WILL NOT be going back to find out! Making reservations for a large party obviously is pointless. They should have declined our party if the kitchen "couldn't handle it." Instead, they sat us, made us wait for 2 hours for pricey sandwiches, and then we got treated like street bums by the horrible owner...Other than this NASTY and spiteful owner, the rest of the staff was OK. Its not there fault they have to work for a crazy, nasty, terrible person.
